Early Christians Speak Against Modalism

“I and My Father are one.”[1]

The Father and the Son are both divine/God/theos (and so is the Holy Spirit)—meaning that they are one in nature (substance, essence or class); there is also one will, one power, and one rule, but Jesus is not the Father! Those who believe that Jesus is the Father have lapsed into a heresy called Sabellianism.[2] It is also referred to as Modalism, Modalistic Monarchianism, or Patripassianism[3] (which means “Father-suffering”). This belief says that we have one eternal God who reveals Himself in three different modes, like one actor with three different masks.[4] This idea was recognized very early as an unscriptural and erroneous teaching that was not part of ‘the faith’.
